The Gift of the Spirit (Acts 2:1-13)
Before the disciples can receive the gifts of God, they first need to know that such gifts are possible and promised. Then they need to make themselves available by giving a span of time and the physical opportunity for the gifts to be bestowed. Anticipation plus patience.
I love the way the Holy Spirit makes himself known in this historic passage through so many of the senses: fire is light, heat; wind is sound, touch. The disciples were filled and began to speak in languages that were foreign to them, but not to their listeners.
From this point on, the disciples were different people. Instead of cowering before the authorities and lying about their relationship to the “criminal” Jesus, they stand before crowds and tell about their Lord, even when it means imprisonment, beatings, and eventually death. Instead of being afraid in the face of persecutions, the disciples are spirit-filled and joy-filled. This is the beginning of the most exciting life anyone could imagine.
