The Deadly Power of God

Ananias and Sapphira Acts 4:32-5:11
First God’s power is poured out on the disciples like tongues of fire. Then they heal a crippled man. Devotion is running high and some of the followers of Jesus sell parcels of land to get money to give to the poor in Jerusalem. But one couple decides to hold back part of their proceeds. It’s not hard to imagine their motives. Their mistake was not in wanting to keep money for themselves, but in thinking they could get away with lying to God. This was not an altruistic human religion they had joined where they could buy their way to glory with a big donation. This was a completely revolutionary movement of the God of the Universe breaking into the world. The God who raised Jesus from the dead knew exactly what was in their hearts as well as in their bank accounts. The consequences of lying to God were dire—both Ananias and his wife were struck dead.
Luke makes sure his readers know that following Jesus is a 100% commitment.
