Round Rainbow
Last week when I was flying home from Boston, I looked out the north side of the airplane and saw what looked like a rainbow, only it was round. I’d never heard of this phenomena. My seatmate thought it was a reflection from the airplane, but I did some research and found out that if the earth was not in the way, we would always see the complete rainbow. Now we can only see the “raincircle” when we’re in the sky or at extremely high elevations.
So it’s not a bow at all, but a circle. And actually it’s not a circle either. The light forms a cone and what we see is a two-dimensional slice of the cone. Amazing. I wonder how much more of what we perceive in the world around us is just a thin fragment of its reality?
