Reading from God’s Big Book

Last month I was in Florida by myself for ten days before my family joined me. I had planned to spend time working on my next painting project by studying and sketching through the Gospel of Mark. But instead, everyday my attention was captivated by the out-of-doors—the beach, the ocean, the canals, the sky, the sand. I walked and rode my bike; I lay in the sun and swam in the Gulf. Being alone, my attention focused on the beauty of creation and I found myself drawn into conversation with the other living things around me.
Last October our daughter was married at our home in the woods overlooking the ravine and wetlands. When our friend Paul Versluis celebrated the ceremony he spoke of reading God’s “little book”, the Bible, and God’s “big book”, creation. My time of solitude in Florida was a study of God’s big book. After soaking in the wild beauty, six poems poured out from me. I will share some of them here.
