Pray or Preach? A comment on Rick Warren at the Inauguration

Someone sent me Chuck Norris’ essay about the lack of media coverage of Rick Warren’s Inaugural prayer. (I’ll send you the text if you’re interested.) Here’s my response: I listened to Rick Warren’s prayer at the Inauguration, but I had a different response than Chuck Norris. Although I totally agree in the power of the Lord’s Prayer, and the astute approach of Paul’s Acts 17 sermon on that Warren mimics in content, I was disappointed. Warren’s prayer sounded more like a sermon than a prayer. It seemed he was addressing the audience instead of God. I doubt Warren “preaches” to God. To me it takes courage and vulnerability to let people see your personal relationship with God by talking to him in public as you do in private. So for me, I was sorry Warren didn’t take the opportunity to show the world what a believer’s heart looks like, but rather told the world what a believer thinks.
Norris’ comment about Obama not mouthing along with the words to the Lord’s Prayer doesn’t mean he wasn’t praying. I think it borders on manipulation to catch people off guard and “force” them recite a prayer. God hears the heart. For me it’s about integrity and free will, not conformity and appearances.
