Descent of the Holy Spirit
After his resurrection but before he went up to be with the Father, Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit. He had told them in John 16:7ff that it was good that he was going away because that meant the Spirit could come be with them and empower them, just like the Spirit empowered Jesus.
In my Revelation painting, the center is the throne room, with the New Jerusalem, the Holy City, descending as promised. In this new painting, the center is the circle of waiting disciples with the promised Holy Spirit descending. On the perimeter of both paintings are the joys and sorrows that we experience in this broken, yet God-permeated world. It is by keeping our eyes on the promise of God’s Word that we receive power and wisdom to both persevere and flourish.
